It is not hard to understand why it is so safe to live in a city like Plano, TX. So what makes Plano as one of the safest cities in America? What are the factors that may affect the safety of one place?
Wealth is one factor. “One of the underlying things, in terms of a city’s safety, would be a very strong tax base, as there are a number of services that are reliant on it,” said Scott B. Clark, president of the New York-based Risk and Insurance Management Society. “That includes an effective, well-staffed police department, fire department, and school system,” he added.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income in Plano, TX is $82,484. That’s nearly 60% above the national average which is $53,046. 7.7% of residents are below the poverty line, compared to a national rate of 14.8%.
Employment is another factor. Sometimes the core reason of why there are crimes in an area is due to unemployment. The unemployment rate in Plano is 4.30% which is lower than the national average of 6.30%. With the recent job growth 3.43% and an estimated job growth of 42.60% over the next 10 years, there’s no doubt, crime rates will continue to decrease.
Plano is a decidedly white-collar city, with over 90% of the workforce are employed in white-collar jobs, which is way above the national average. Plano is a city of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. “High-growth cities with low unemployment are safer,” says Bruce McIndoe, president of iJet Intelligent Risk Systems, a Maryland-based risk-assessment firm. “When people are gainfully employed, they are more invested in their city.”
For public safety, the City of Plano’s Police Department mission is to provide outstanding police services, in partnership with the community, to maintain a safe environment that contributes to the quality of life. The City of Plano Police Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) and has received the Accreditation with Excellence Award, which designated Plano as an extraordinary example in Law Enforcement. The Plano Police Department is nationally known for its highly trained officers, outstanding salaries and benefits, and first-class equipment.
One thing unique when it comes to handling crimes in the city is that Plano regularly conducts classes, seminars and workshops related to public safety and crime prevention. Also whenever there is an event or activity in the city, the Plano Police Department are always involved for security.
In Plano, one of the biggest factors making it one of the safest cities in America is how the citizens act together to ensure the safety of their fellows. The city has citizen programs which include the CARE Program, Citizens Assisting Plano Police, Community Camera Program, Neighborhood Crime Watch, Take Me Home Program, and so much more! There is a citizen public safety program for everyone! How sweet living in such a place with neighbors watching out for each other. Too good to be true? No, this is absolutely real in Plano. In fact, the city has been consistently receiving awards, accreditations, and titles proving how safe it is to live in Plano, TX.
In 2005, 2006, and 2011, Plano was designated the best place to live in the Western United States by CNN Money magazine. In 2006, Plano was selected as the 11th best place to live in the United States by CNN Money magazine. It was also selected as the safest city in America in 2010 and 2011 by Forbes.
