For a lot of people, spring is the time to throw open the windows and do a thorough house cleaning. Others want to get organized in preparation for selling their home. For whatever reason, if you want to organize your Collin County, Texas home, where do you begin?

Well, if you have a lot of clutter, you need to find someplace to put it. Before tackling what you can see, perhaps you should look where you can’t see. I mean the closets, drawers, and cabinets, of course. There seems to be an unwritten law that your possessions will always outnumber your places to store them. You begin with a nice, neat closet, and before too long, you’ve run out of space.

The best way to tackle a messy closet (or drawer, etc.) is to empty it. Then, begin sorting what you will keep from what you won’t. Experts say if you haven’t used (or worn) it within the past year, you probably don’t need it. It’s a highly individualized process, however. Only you can decide if the sweater you wore in high school or that jersey you wore in college is worth space it occupies.

Some people ask friends to help make decisions about what to keep. If you are particularly attached to your stuff but want to begin separating yourself from so many possessions, you might invite the friend with the tidiest house to help you. You can always donate some things with the idea that at least someone will benefit from your loss. Then there’s the time-honored practice of having a yard sale.

There are numerous aids to the organization out there. You can find many of them online. Again, your personal taste can dictate just how squared away you will be. It is possible to have a casual look to your organization, but it may take more time and effort to keep that system looking nice than it would have a hard and fast “a place for everything and everything in its place” regimen.

One word of advice: Before you go out and buy a supply of the latest storage bins and baskets, do the sorting, and take notes so you know what sizes and how many items you’ll need. You don’t want to end up with a lot of containers that have to be stored because you ran out of items to put in them.
