Princeton, TX was named in honor of Prince Dowlin, a landowner and promoter of the town.  In early 1945, during World War II the city became a site camp for Germans prisoner-of-war.  The city then employed the prisoner-of-war to work on their farms and to make city improvements like public park expansion.  The prisoner-of-war also built the historical Community Park/WWII P.O.W. Camp as a living memorial and shrine to those who served and died during World War II.

The city also boasts its excellent schools, attractive neighborhoods and amenities that can definitely compete with big cities.  Visit, explore and discover the charm of this small town.

Onions have long been associated with the City of Princeton so it won’t be a surprise that a festival honoring their best produce is celebrated.

Princeton Onion Festival happens annually in the month of April at Princeton High School hosted by the Lions Club in cooperation with Princeton ISD.  This festival has lots of actions to offer like Tennis Tournament, 3 on 3 Basketball Game, Kids’ Games and Bounce Houses, Auctions and Raffles, and 5k Fun Run.  Prepare shopping because during this time, there will also be Craft and Vendor Fair.  Car show is also one of the reason why this is the all time favorite festival in the City so don’t forget to bring your best wheels, and finally, festival is incomplete without music and live entertainment.

Parks and Recreation in Princeton, TX

The city has two historical parks which are both constructed in World War II by prisoner-of-war, both also has undergone beautification so that residents and visitors alike can enjoy strolling and playing.  It is also a fantastic place to held weddings, city events and other family activities.

The surrounding of the city alone is a great place to enjoy especially during evening drives.  The wildlife, creeks and shaded path views are so romantic and breathtaking.

One of the women’s clubs in the city started planning to beautify the city in 1943, during that time the city was very unappealing because a large dumping ground in the city center.  Under a special bill, the prisoners were employed to construct the park.  It was built in memory of the soldiers and people who served the army during the World War II.

Veterans Memorial park features gazebo, picnic tables and park benches.  The park is also a great place for all occasions like weddings, anniversaries, city events and family gatherings.  It is located in just across the Princeton Police Department.

Community Park is one of sites in the city with richest history.  In 1940, a migratory camp was built for people who moved in the city to work during onion and cotton season.  The overhead storage tank that was used in the campsite can still be seen nowadays.  In 1945, it became a camp for prisoner-of-war in World War II.

The park is very spacious; it is an awesome place for walking and running.  There are also numerous amenities to enjoy which includes: 4 Ball fields with lights, basketball Court, playground, volleyball court, restrooms, pavilions and picnic or camping area.

Sister Groove Park is located in the outskirts of town that will certainly provide an unforgettable biking and hiking experience. The trail offers numerous activities that ate best in October to November.

Gear up and explore.  Sister Groove is approximately 5.4 mile loop trail through the woods, but during the hike don’t forget to explore, indulge your eyes with the beautiful wildlife you can see butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, rodents, rabbits, and birds.  Exquisite grasses and wildflowers can also be seen depending on the season and yes, of course poison ivy, spiders, coyotes also inhibit the area so better avoid them.
